Oshen built the first ocean robot to collect data during a Category 5 hurricane

Oshen, founded by Anahita Laverack, developed the first ocean robot capable of gathering data amidst a Category 5 hurricane. Originally aiming to become an aerospace engineer, Laverack shifted her career after realizing the critical shortage of oceanic data hindered autonomous sailing robot projects like the Microtransat Challenge, where she had unsuccessfully attempted to cross the Atlantic with a sail-powered micro-robot.

Laverack discovered that much of the ocean data is tightly controlled by private firms and often exists only in paper reports, lacking accessible digital formats. This gap motivated her to develop robotic fleets that can provide real-time, open ocean data, even in extreme weather, improving the accuracy and availability of vital environmental information.

Oshen’s technology promises to enhance understanding of ocean dynamics and improve forecasting of severe weather events, which may ultimately help save lives and reduce damage from future natural disasters.ё
