Sony clarifies scale of game disc production cuts
Sony DADC said that in 2028, Sony’s disc manufacturing plant in Thalgau will reduce its total output by 10%, not by 90% as had been assumed in earlier reports. The Verge reports, citing an unnamed Sony DADC representative who commented on the situation to journalist Brian Crecente.
Clarification on production volumes
According to the division’s representative, the previous statement referred to an expected 10% reduction in total output, rather than a cut in production to 10% of its current level. Earlier reports said that the Thalgau facility would produce 90% fewer discs in 2028.
Sony DADC did not respond to The Verge’s request to verify information about the facility’s restructuring. The publication also asked whether all 300 plant employees are being retrained to work with microlenses instead of discs. ORF Austria reported such plans in July.

Repeat orders for disc games
According to The Verge, Sony has not abandoned its plan to stop producing new games on discs after the January 2028 cutoff date. At the same time, publishers will still be able to place repeat orders for already existing PlayStation disc games.
The possibility of such repeat orders may be one of the reasons for the facility’s slower transition to other products. The Sony DADC representative did not provide Crecente with further details.
