Apple unveils its first foldable iPhone Duo in the US
Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, in Cupertino, California. The device opens like a passport and doubles the screen size. When unfolded, it has the largest display among the company’s phones and is the thinnest iPhone, The Guardian reports.
The first foldable iPhone
Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, said that the iPhone Duo combines a new design with key iPhone capabilities. According to him, the company sought to create a larger display that would be as natural and intuitive to use as an iPad.
Ternus took over as Apple’s head on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook. The presentation, titled Surprise and Shine, was the first product event at which he appeared as CEO. Apple’s competitors have been releasing foldable smartphones since the late 2010s, but this is the first such model for the iPhone maker.
Price and specifications
According to the publication, the iPhone Duo is expected to cost more than $2,000. By comparison, the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold sells for $1,899. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple began testing prototypes of a foldable display for the iPhone in early 2021.

According to media reports, the smartphone may have a diagonal of about 5.5 inches when folded and 7.8 inches when unfolded. The model may also not receive Face ID due to limitations in the thickness of the body, instead offering Touch ID fingerprint identification.
Other Apple announcements
The company also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro with a starting price of $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, starting at $1,299. Apple said the models will receive Siri AI artificial intelligence features capable of working with third-party apps. The company reported support for more than 300,000 apps.
Apple called the new models a significant step forward in battery life: according to the company, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will operate for up to 45 hours, while the iPhone 18 Pro will operate for up to 36 hours. In addition, the manufacturer announced AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, as well as the first MacBook with a touchscreen.
