Tesla is preparing for the public launch of its autonomous Cybercab robotaxi

The American company Tesla is preparing for the public launch of its driverless robotaxi, the Cybercab, in Austin, Texas. The unveiling of the new vehicle could take place as early as August 2026.

The publication The Information previously reported on preparations for the public launch of the Cybercab.

Subsequently, the official Tesla Robotaxi account on social media platform X effectively confirmed these plans.

Users who book rides with the Tesla robotaxi will have a chance to attend the unveiling of the new vehicle.

“More rides = better chances,” reads the Tesla Robotaxi post.

The company has not yet disclosed details about the upcoming event. Winners are expected to be announced by August 25, after which details about the Cybercab launch may be revealed.

The Cybercab remains the only mass-market robotaxi model that Tesla currently has in its public plans.

It is a two-seater, steering-wheel-less electric vehicle designed primarily for autonomous passenger transport.

According to The Information, Tesla initially plans to use the Cybercab on Austin’s roads to transport its own employees. After that, the vehicles may join a full-fledged urban robotaxi service.

Currently, Tesla’s robotaxis are based on Model Y crossovers equipped with the Full Self-Driving suite of autonomous features.

The service is available in select areas:

  • Miami;
  • Orlando;
  • Tampa;
  • Austin;
  • Dallas;
  • Houston.

Tesla isn’t the only company developing driverless taxis in the U.S. Zoox, owned by Amazon, previously received permission to launch a small number of driverless taxis in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

Thus, the potential launch of Cybercab in Austin would mark an important step for Tesla in the development of mass autonomous transportation.

Mashable reports this, citing The Information.

As a reminder, Tesla previously added the vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature for the Model Y Premium electric crossover in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Owners of this version will be able to power external devices with electricity from the car’s high-voltage battery at a power of up to 2.4 kW, according to InsideEVs.
