Scientists grow lab-made chocolate with authentic taste
Scientists have successfully grown artificial chocolate that tastes identical to the real thing, without any additives or impurities. This breakthrough was made possible through collaboration between Belgian food giant Puratos and startup California Cultured, aiming to solve the long-standing problem of authentic chocolate’s high cost.

Researchers selected the best cocoa plants with superior flavor and aroma characteristics, extracted their cells, and placed them into special nutrient-rich tanks. The resulting product is ready-to-use chocolate that replicates the genuine taste. An ambitious facility for producing this lab-grown chocolate is expected to launch by the end of 2026, with the team currently securing permits and preparing for production.
If successful, this project could transform the chocolate market by making high-quality chocolate more affordable while preserving its authentic flavor.
