On March 20, the Orthodox Church commemorates the holy fathers who suffered a martyr’s death at the Monastery of Saint Sava the Sanctified in Palestine at the end of the 8th century. The monks, among whom were Saints John, Sergius, and Patricius, refused to leave the monastery during a Saracen attack. When the invaders demanded the church treasures, the brethren replied that their only wealth was their faith. Some of the monks were executed by the sword, others were suffocated by smoke in the caves, yet none renounced their calling.
