On August 8, Ukraine honors Saint Emilian the Confessor and the martyrs Eleutherius and Leonid

On August 8, Orthodox Christians commemorate Saint Emilian, the Confessor and Bishop of Kyzyk, as well as the Holy Martyrs Eleutherius and Leonid. On this day, people remember those who remained faithful to their faith despite persecution and trials. The folk calendar also associates a number of omens and traditions with August 8.

On August 8, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Emilian the Confessor, Bishop of Cyzicus. He lived in the 9th century—a time when the Byzantine Church was experiencing a severe conflict over iconoclasm. During the reign of Emperor Leo V the Armenian, opponents of icon veneration attempted to force the clergy to renounce this tradition. Emilian was among those who refused to renounce Orthodox doctrine.

According to tradition, the emperor demanded that the bishops renounce the veneration of holy images. In response, Emilian emphasized that matters of faith should not be decided by order of secular authorities. For his stance, the bishop faced persecution. He was stripped of his see and sent into exile, where he spent the final years of his life. In the Church tradition, Saint Emilian is remembered as an example of a man who did not renounce his convictions even under pressure and in the face of the threat of punishment.

The Holy Martyrs Eleutherius and Leonid

On this day, the Holy Martyrs Eleutherius and Leonid are also honored. They lived during the early centuries of Christianity, when followers of the new faith in the Roman Empire were persecuted. Eleutherius and Leonid preached Christianity together. For this, they were arrested and forced to renounce their faith and offer sacrifices to pagan gods.

The saints refused to comply with their persecutors’ demands. During their torture, they supported one another and remained steadfast in their convictions. Ultimately, Eleutherius and Leonid died a martyr’s death. In church tradition, their story has become an example of courage, resilience, and mutual support in difficult times.

Folk Traditions for August 8

In the folk calendar, this day was also associated with observations of nature. People tried to predict what the end of summer, fall, and winter would be like based on the weather and the behavior of animals. In particular, it was said:

  • if the leaves on the trees begin to turn yellow from the bottom up, fall may come late, and the following year will be a bountiful harvest;
  • if flies and bees become more aggressive, and frogs croak loudly, rain is on the way;
  • morning chill or thick fog were considered a sign of a rainy August;
  • strong, gusty winds on this day, according to folk beliefs, foreshadowed a cold and snowy winter.

At the same time, such signs are part of folk tradition, not scientific weather forecasts.

What People Were Advised Not to Do on August 8

According to folk customs, people tried to avoid quarrels and conflicts on this day. It was not advisable to use foul language, gossip, insult others, or dredge up old grievances. It was also considered undesirable to constantly complain about life, health problems, or financial difficulties.

Traditionally, people tried to finish heavy work in the garden, vegetable patch, or field before noon. August 8 also falls during the Dormition Fast. Therefore, believers who observe the fast abstain from meat, dairy products, eggs, and alcohol.

The main significance of this day in the church tradition is linked to the memory of people who preserved their faith and convictions even under difficult circumstances. Therefore, on August 8, believers may spend the day in prayer, visit a church, and devote more attention to their loved ones.
