Budanov discussed the UPA Heroes unit with the Polish Minister of Defense
On Saturday, June 6, Kirill Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, met with Polish Minister of National Defense Vladislav Kosiniak-Kamysz. Among the topics discussed were issues of historical memory and bilateral relations between the two countries.
According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland and Ukraine remain partners in the field of security, but historical issues must also be the subject of open dialogue.
“But when it comes to history, we must tell each other the truth, because only then can we build the future,” emphasized the head of the Polish Defense Ministry.
The minister noted that during talks with Budanov, he raised the issue of the decision to name one of the Ukrainian military units after the UPA.
“I clearly outlined Poland’s expectations regarding the decision to name one of the military units after the UPA,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
He also underscored the Polish side’s position regarding the historical events of the Volhynia tragedy.
“The memory of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy is not up for debate. There are lines that cannot be crossed,” the Polish defense minister stated.
The meeting between Budanov and Kosiniak-Kamysz took place against the backdrop of active military and security cooperation between Ukraine and Poland, while historical issues remain one of the sensitive topics in bilateral relations.

The day before, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki met with the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, during which the parties discussed the controversy surrounding the naming of one of the Special Operations Forces units “Heroes of the UPA.”
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced private consultations with Ukraine regarding the possible naming of one of the Special Operations Forces units “Heroes of the UPA.” According to him, this issue is being discussed through diplomatic channels.
Warsaw has reacted to the decision to rename the Ukrainian military unit. This concerns an elite unit of the Special Operations Forces, which, according to reports, has been named in honor of the Heroes of the UPA. This has sparked a critical reaction in Polish society and political circles.
