A government official in the Kyiv region will stand trial for the death of a two-year-old boy

An official with the Brovary City Council is suspected of professional negligence that led to the death of a two-year-old boy.

Juvenile prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine accuse the head of the Department of Prevention and Protection of Children’s Rights of failing to respond appropriately to a threat to the lives of children in a family facing difficult circumstances.

The tragedy occurred in the spring of 2026 in Brovary, when the mother failed to call doctors for her sick child and, after the child’s death, hid the body in a box in a closet, where it was later found by law enforcement officers. Two months prior, the child welfare services had received reports of the woman’s alcohol abuse, which were confirmed during an inspection; however, the official in question did not initiate the removal of the minors from the dangerous environment. The city council employee now faces 5 to 8 years in prison under Part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, while the mother is already in custody for willful failure to fulfill parental duties.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine on Telegram.

Earlier, the Kyiv Court of Appeals upheld the preventive measure against former Odessa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov in a case of official negligence that resulted in the deaths of nine people.

Law enforcement officials announced that nine officials from the Odesa City Council and a municipal enterprise are under investigation for official negligence that led to the deaths of people during the massive flood on September 30.
