St. Nicholas Day 2026: When to Celebrate and Why the Date Has Changed
St. Nicholas Day is an important holiday for Christians, as it symbolizes humanity, kindness, and mercy. At the same time, it’s worth checking the date of the holiday in advance this year, as it has changed.
How and Why the Date of the Holiday Changed
Throughout history, various church calendars have been in use in Ukraine:
the Julian calendar—introduced by Julius Caesar on January 1, 45 B.C.;
the Gregorian calendar—introduced on October 4, 1582, by Pope Gregory XIII;
the New Julian calendar—developed in 1923 by Milutin Milanković, a Serbian astronomer and professor of mathematics and celestial mechanics at the University of Belgrade.
However, for the most part, the Ukrainian Church used the Julian calendar (which became one of the elements of the Russian church tradition).
On September 1, 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) switched to the New Julian calendar, which is considered:
more perfect than the Julian calendar;
more accurate (closer to astronomical events) than the Gregorian calendar.
As a result, all “fixed” holidays—those with fixed, unchanging dates—have been moved up by 13 days.
St. Nicholas Day was no exception.
When is St. Nicholas Day in 2026?
Today, most church parishes in Ukraine use the New Julian calendar.
Previously, according to the “old” style (or the Julian calendar), St. Nicholas Day was traditionally celebrated on December 19.
Now, however, following the OCU’s transition to the “New” Style, the holiday has shifted and falls on December 6.
“From now on, we will honor St. Nicholas on December 6, according to the New Julian calendar, along with most Local Orthodox Churches,” the OCU press service previously reported.
It is also worth noting that in 2026, the feast day falls on a Sunday.
It is on this day that the OCU will commemorate St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia and Wonderworker.
As a reminder, St. Vladimir’s Cathedral in Kyiv is switching to the New Julian calendar.
Easter in 2027: When to Celebrate and How the Date Is Determined.
As a reminder, September 23 is celebrated as Checkers Day in Ukrainian calendars. This date is dedicated to one of the most famous board games, which combines simple rules with serious tactics. At the same time, Checkers Day does not have the status of an official international holiday recognized by the UN or UNESCO, and the origin of the specific date of September 23 is linked to unofficial calendars of commemorative dates.
