An experienced bomb disposal expert was killed in an explosion at a police station in Rivne
Lieutenant Colonel Mykola Omelchuk, 47, was killed in an explosion at the police administrative building in Rivne. The law enforcement officer had served in the police for over 25 years and had extensive experience as a bomb disposal expert. He participated four times in demining operations in Ukraine’s de-occupied territories.
The tragedy occurred today, August 31, at approximately 3:30 p.m. on the grounds of Police Station No. 1 in Rivne. “The life of the 47-year-old police lieutenant colonel was cut short today, August 31, at approximately 3:30 p.m., as a result of an explosion that occurred on the premises of Police Station No. 1 (Rivne),” law enforcement officials reported.
Mykola Omelchuk served Ukraine for over 25 years and worked with explosive devices. During this time, he rose through the ranks from a bomb disposal technician at the National Explosive Ordnance Disposal Center to deputy chief of the department—head of the Explosive Safety Division of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service at the Main Department of the National Police in Rivne Oblast.
Throughout his service, Omelchuk was involved in the detection and disposal of explosive devices. After the outbreak of full-scale war, he participated in the demining of territories liberated from Russian occupiers.
As part of a combined unit of National Police explosive ordnance disposal experts, Omelchuk traveled four times to de-occupied territories of Ukraine to carry out demining operations.
“His professionalism, courage, composure, and boundless dedication to duty earned him the deep respect of his colleagues and everyone who had the honor of working alongside him,” the police stated.
Law enforcement officials called the lieutenant colonel’s death an irreparable loss for the National Police, his colleagues, friends, and family. “Mykola’s death is an irreparable loss for the National Police of Ukraine, for his comrades, friends, and loved ones. The bright memory of Mykola Omelchuk will remain in our hearts forever,” the statement reads. Mykola Omelchuk is survived by his wife, two daughters aged 21 and 17, and a five-year-old son.

The Security Service of Ukraine announced the exposure and arrest of two FSB agents who, according to the investigation, were planning a series of terrorist attacks in the Kharkiv region. One of their missions was an attempt to carry out a mass murder of Ukrainian military personnel under the guise of a “charity” party.
In the Kyiv region, a court sentenced an FSB agent to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property for passing on to the occupiers the coordinates of air defense units protecting Kyiv.
