Environmentalists have discovered a leak of untreated wastewater into the Bucha River in the Kyiv region

In the Bucha District of Kyiv Oblast, untreated wastewater was found to be flowing into the Bucha River. 

According to a report by the State Environmental Inspection of the Capital District on March 26, during an inspection of the area, a concrete well was found from which wastewater was flowing onto the ground and then into the water body. 

Specialists collected surface water and soil samples for laboratory testing and notified the police of the identified violations of environmental protection laws.

The State Environmental Inspectorate urged residents of Bucha and Irpin to promptly report cases of environmental pollution or inaction by local authorities. For each confirmed violation, inspectors promise to take state enforcement measures to hold those responsible accountable and mitigate the impact on the ecosystem. An investigation is currently underway to determine the extent of damage caused to the region’s water resources.

On Monday morning, March 9, 2026, residents of the capital faced a sharp deterioration in air quality.
