Europe Is Running Out of Chanterelles: Suppliers Turn to Ukraine
Due to a poor chanterelle harvest in a number of European countries, suppliers have begun actively seeking alternative sources of mushrooms, including Ukraine.
The main causes of the shortage were drought and high temperatures in the Balkans, which significantly reduced the mushroom harvest.
According to Liza Niklas, a representative of the German company Pilze Niklas, Ukraine and Lithuania are currently the main alternative suppliers of chanterelles to the European market.
Although Ukrainian mushrooms may be less visually appealing, they meet quality requirements and are considered an important source of supply.
The situation is further complicated by a reduction in supplies from Belarus, which, following the suspension of mushroom imports from Russia, has become one of the key suppliers of chanterelles to the EU.
Due to limited supply, prices for chanterelles in Europe are already rising, and the mushroom shortage may persist for at least the next two weeks.
