How Orthodox Christians Will Celebrate the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God on September 8

On September 8, Orthodox Christians celebrate one of the most important church holidays—the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary. Believers regard this feast as a special day symbolizing the beginning of a new stage in the history of humanity’s salvation; it also carries a profound meaning associated with faith, hope, and sincere prayer.

According to church tradition, the Virgin Mary’s parents were the righteous Joachim and Anna. They led a devout life, but for a long time had no children, which in those days was seen as a severe trial. Despite this, the couple never ceased to pray and maintain their unwavering faith. In response to their perseverance, an angel announced the imminent birth of a daughter who was destined to become the Mother of Jesus Christ. The example of Joachim and Anna reminds believers of the importance of maintaining trust in God, patience, and the absence of despair even during the most difficult periods of life, emphasizing that significant changes often begin with subtle, yet faith-filled events.

In Ukraine, this holiday has been honored with great reverence since ancient times. Traditionally, the celebration begins with attending a church service, where believers pray before icons of the Mother of God, give thanks for all that is good, and offer prayers for help. Since the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God falls at the beginning of autumn, it is historically linked to the end of fieldwork; thus, our ancestors gave thanks to the Mother of God for the harvest and for abundance in their homes. In addition, this day is considered a family holiday, when it is customary to gather with loved ones, visit parents, and spend time in a warm atmosphere.

In folk tradition, this day is also associated with a number of strict restrictions and warnings. On the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is not recommended to quarrel, get into conflicts, offend others, or speak ill of anyone. It is also considered unacceptable to refuse to help those in need, to engage in heavy physical labor, to sew, to embroider, to work with a needle, or to spend the day dwelling on negative thoughts and sadness.
