A 37-year-old Soviet VAZ sedan has been listed for sale on the used car market in Dnipro. The owner has set an extremely high price for the car, counting, in particular, on interest from classic car enthusiasts.
However, a closer look at the car’s history raises doubts about the validity of such a price. Experts point to signs of a typical scheme in which nostalgia is exploited to sell an old car for significantly more than its actual value.
In early July of this year, an ambitious listing for a 37-year-old VAZ-2106 sedan appeared on the popular marketplace AUTO.RIA.
Initially, the owner set an astronomical price of $9,500 for this “find,” which is equivalent to about 424,000 hryvnias. However, Ukrainian consumers proved to be much more rational than the seller had expected, and after two months of zero demand, the price had to be drastically reduced.
As of September 7, 2026, the car’s price had dropped by $2,000 at once. Now the asking price is $7,500, or just over 336,000 hryvnias. But even this discount seems completely out of line with Ukrainian realities, since the average market price for a standard VAZ-2106 in the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to statistics from rst.ua, ranges from $600 to $1,100.
How many owners has this VAZ had?
The most interesting part begins when you dig into this car’s history. In a recent September listing, the seller confidently claims that the car has had only one owner. However, official data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ public registries ruthlessly shatter this myth.
During its lifetime, the sedan has already had three owners. Moreover, the most recent sales contract was signed on June 26, 2026. This means that the current owner purchased the car at the end of June and, literally a week later, put it up for sale at an exorbitant markup, trying to make a quick profit off retro enthusiasts.
What is known about the car’s specifications and condition?
As for the technical specifications, this is a VAZ-21061 variant, which belongs to the first generation of the model. Under the hood is a less powerful 1.5-liter engine from the “three” (VAZ-2103) with an output of 77 horsepower, whereas the classic “six” would have boasted a 1.6-liter engine.
The engine is paired with a standard 4-speed manual transmission, since the factory specifications of that era simply didn’t provide for any other options.
Credit must be given to the car’s condition: the stated mileage of 12,000 kilometers does indeed seem accurate. The car has retained its original factory paint job, a flawless interior with no signs of wear, and even authentic Soviet tires.
Legally, the car is also in good standing—it is not wanted by the authorities or under seizure. Physically, this find is located in the city of Dnipro, which is one of the largest automotive hubs in eastern Ukraine, and that is where the seller is ready to meet with potential buyers.
However, the main question is whether such a purchase makes sense. For $7,500 on the current Ukrainian market, you can easily find a perfectly serviceable and comfortable foreign car from the late 2000s or early 2010s.
