What religious holiday is celebrated on June 26?
On June 26, Orthodox Christians commemorate the Venerable John, Bishop of Gothia, and Saint Dionysius of Suzdal. Both saints left a significant mark on the history of the Church, and folk tradition on this day associates it with omens regarding the weather, the harvest, and the onset of the true summer heat.
On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable John, Bishop of Gothia, as well as Saint Dionysius of Suzdal. Both saints lived in different eras, but they were united by their devotion to the faith and their service to the people.
Venerable John, Bishop of Gothia
Saint John lived in the 8th century. He was a monk and theologian who later became head of the Diocese of Gothia in Crimea. The saint was among those who openly opposed iconoclasm. At that time, the authorities forbade the veneration of holy icons, but John did not renounce his convictions and continued to defend the Orthodox faith.

In addition to his spiritual ministry, the bishop also cared for the safety of his flock. According to tradition, he helped defend the region against attacks by the Khazars and supported the people during difficult times.
Saint Dionysius of Suzdal
June 26 is also the feast day of Saint Dionysius, who began his spiritual journey at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. He later founded the Nizhny Novgorod Pechersk Monastery and became Archbishop of Suzdal. Toward the end of his life, while in Constantinople, he was appointed Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus’. However, due to political conflicts, he was unable to assume the see and died in captivity in Kyiv.

According to the Kyiv-Pechersk tradition, on this day we also honor the Venerable Dionysius of the Caves, who was known as Schepa. According to legend, in 1463, during the Easter service, he was circling the relics of the saints in St. Anthony’s Cave with a censer and exclaimed, “Christ is risen!” In response, as the Paterikon recounts, he heard a voice say, “He is truly risen!” After this miracle, the venerable one withdrew into solitude and spent the rest of his life in seclusion.
