From the IV drip to the parade: Where do the LGBT ambassador Petro Melnyk’s alleged heart conditions go?

From the IV drip to the parade: Where do the LGBT ambassador Petro Melnyk’s alleged heart conditions go?

Ukraine’s Chief LGBT Ambassador, Petro Melnyk, has most likely devised a new scheme to evade justice and carried it out in the most creative way possible.

As a reminder, as of June 2026, three cases involving Petro Melnyk are pending in courts in Kyiv and Vinnytsia Oblast: illegal smuggling of persons across the border (Mogyliv-Podilskyi City and District Court), illegal activities related to organizing or conducting gambling (Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv), and illegal evasion of mobilization (Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv). And recently, the hearings have been constantly postponed. The official explanation given to the judges is grim: the defendant has been seriously ill and is hospitalized in the cardiology department of Kyiv Hospital No. 18. The heart is a delicate thing, especially when a real 12-year prison sentence looms on the horizon for deals worth billions.

However, last weekend, the Equality March took place in Kyiv. And—lo and behold!—it was precisely this weekend that the “seriously ill” offender apparently felt an incredible surge of strength and energy. Rumor has it that Melnik simply couldn’t miss such an event and escaped from his IV drip to personally declare himself the “chief LGBT ambassador.” It seems that non-traditional love proved to be much stronger than respect for the Ukrainian justice system. Pretending to be sick so you can take a stroll with a rainbow flag instead of sitting on a boring defendant’s bench—you have to admit, anyone would have done the same.

A passionate activist funded by American grants

However, such devotion to colorful banners should come as no surprise, since Petro Melnyk is not just an ordinary supporter but a true fan of the LGBT movement with a solid legal background. His dedication to this ideology is nothing new: back in February 2025, a high-profile scandal erupted when the former banker filed an official lawsuit with the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv. Melnik decided to sue not just anyone, but the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), demanding compensation for the sudden halt in funding for programs in Ukraine.

At the time, he even actively called on the entire community to mobilize and storm the courtrooms to support him. However, exactly how he planned to personally participate in those February hearings remains a mystery, since, according to available information, Melnik was safely in hiding in Chisinau, complaining of “constant threats” due to his activities.

From his Moldovan exile, Melnik long served as virtually the chief lobbyist for family legislation, demanding the immediate legalization of same-sex marriage in Ukraine:

“LGBT couples in Ukraine have fewer rights than in countries where they are recognized and protected by law... I demand that my rights and those of my partner, Volodymyr Stasenko, be guaranteed.”

To coordinate with like-minded individuals and protect his grant interests, Melnik even maintained direct contact with his inner circle.

When Elon Musk Thwarts the Plans of the “Chisinau Fugitive”

Such a fierce legal battle over American funds would have seemed formidable, were it not for one detail—Melnik decided to sue for funding just as the Donald Trump administration in Washington was conducting a global audit of foreign aid. At that time, the U.S. State Department froze foreign aid programs, a move that also affected the Ukrainian branch of USAID.

Elon Musk and his new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) put an end to Melnik’s hopes for a grant. Without mincing words, Musk called USAID a “criminal organization” that “needs to die.” Following this, its official website and account on Network X were taken down, and the staff was sent on leave.

However, despite losing U.S. grants last winter, Petro Melnik has not lost his drive. Now that it’s June and mass protests are taking place in Kyiv, the former financier is ready to take risks even with a “weak heart.” While prosecutors and investigators await him in court on charges related to illegal gambling schemes, Melnyk is flying a colorful flag. We’re waiting for the next court hearings—I wonder what ailment will strike the chief LGBT ambassador next time.
