Toys Containing Toxic Metals Found in Ukraine — List

In Ukraine, inspections have revealed children’s toys with critically high levels of lead and cadmium, which may pose a serious threat to children’s health. Some of these products have already been deemed hazardous due to toxic materials, flammability, or injury risks.

Several types of children’s toys sold on the Ukrainian market were found to contain dangerously high levels of toxic metals—cadmium and lead—which can have a serious impact on a child’s body, particularly the nervous system. This was reported by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection following routine inspections. The agency notes that at least eight types of hazardous non-food products are involved, including night lights, bubble wands, musical devices, and educational toys for children.

In particular, critical exceedances of safety standards were recorded: in some products, the cadmium content reached thousands of milligrams per kilogram, while the permissible level should not exceed 100 mg/kg. Lead levels in some products also exceeded the standard by hundreds of times. Among the hazardous products identified:

  • an LED night light with a “Ball” button—cadmium 3,480 mg/kg (limit: up to 100), lead 882,000 mg/kg (limit: up to 1,000);
  • a soap bubble kit—cadmium 2,890 mg/kg, lead 935,000 mg/kg;
  • children’s flying toy — cadmium 3,260 mg/kg, lead 795,000 mg/kg;
  • “Musical Elephant Phone” toy — cadmium 4,060 mg/kg, lead 825,000 mg/kg;
  • musical and educational phones for children—lead up to 930,000 mg/kg in various samples.

Other violations unrelated to chemical composition were also identified. Some toys are made of flammable materials or pose a risk of suffocation or injury to children. The State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection emphasizes that oversight of children’s products is being strengthened, as such violations can have long-term health consequences. The agency urges parents to carefully check the origin of toys and avoid questionable products without safety certification. This was reported by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

In the city of Zviahel in the Zhytomyr region, six children aged 1.5 to 17 years and two adults were hospitalized in the infectious diseases ward of a general hospital with a diagnosis of “intestinal infection.”
