Gas imports to Ukraine fell 28-fold in April

Gas imports to Ukraine fell 28-fold in April

In April 2026, Ukraine imported approximately 29 million cubic meters of natural gas, which is 28 times less than in March. Analysts attribute the sharp decline in supplies from European markets to high gas prices, which have reduced the economic viability of imports. The change in supply volumes reflects fluctuations in energy markets and the impact of price conditions on Ukraine’s trade operations.

This is reported by ExPro.

As noted, last month, 28 times less natural gas was imported than in March 2026 (789 million cubic meters) and eight times less than in April 2025 (219 million cubic meters). This is the lowest monthly import figure since December 2024.

Analysts attribute the reduction in gas supplies from Europe to high natural gas prices on European markets. At the same time, given the relatively high gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities, Ukraine can afford not to import gas for a certain period.

In April, nearly all gas supplied to the “customs warehouse” of Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities came from Poland—23.8 million cubic meters, or 83% of total imports. Additionally, from April 16–22, imports from Hungary were delivered directly to the Ukrainian gas transmission system, totaling 4.8 million cubic meters.

In January–April of this year, Ukraine imported 2.21 billion cubic meters of gas, which is 2.1 times more than during the same period in 2025. The largest volume of gas came from Poland—1.03 billion cubic meters (46.8% of total imports). Hungary supplied 779 million cubic meters (35.3%), Slovakia – 280 million cubic meters (12.7%), and the Southern route – 117 million cubic meters (5.2%).

Ukrainewill increase gas imports from Poland, according to the regulator.

Ukrainesharply reduced electricity imports in April.

Ukraine is proposing to review electricity price caps, as current restrictions are already hindering imports from Europe.

Electricity purchases from Moldova and EU countries rose to 35,000 MWh following the start of a maintenance campaign at one of the nuclear power units
