The Cabinet of Ministers has allowed Ukrainians released from captivity to renew their driver's licenses free of charge

UA NEWS 18 June 2026 12:00
The Cabinet of Ministers has allowed Ukrainians released from captivity to renew their driver's licenses free of charge

Ukrainian citizens who were held captive by Russia or were unlawfully deprived of their liberty as a result of the full-scale war will now be able to replace their lost driver’s licenses and vehicle registration documents completely free of charge

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted this decision to provide additional social support to those affected.

According to the head of the ministry, individuals will be able to exercise their legal right to free replacement of lost documents once within one year from the date of their official release from captivity or places of unlawful detention.

The procedure for restoring documents will be carried out through the extensive network of service centers operated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

This government initiative applies both to the renewal of a driver’s license of the appropriate category and to obtaining a new registration certificate for a personal vehicle.

In addition, the Ukrainian government has resolved at the legislative level a long-standing problem regularly faced by relatives of persons who have gone missing under special circumstances.

The new rules allow officially appointed guardians, who are responsible for managing the property of such citizens, to independently renew vehicle registration documents.

This primarily concerns obtaining duplicates of vehicle registration certificates that were previously issued directly in the names of the missing persons.

This was announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko.
