Gardener's Calendar for July 6–12, Based on the Phases of the Moon

In Ukraine, the busiest period for home gardens is beginning, as the summer sun demands that gardeners pay special attention to their plants. The week of July 6–12 will be crucial for determining the future harvest of many crops. The brief July rains that swept through various regions of the country have somewhat alleviated the heat and saturated the soil with moisture; however, the high air temperatures are forcing gardeners to carefully plan every action in the field.

An analysis of the lunar calendar for this period shows that the Moon is in its third quarter and is gradually waning. At this time, the plants’ vital juices are directed toward the root system, making this week ideal for working with root crops and applying fertilizer. The most favorable days for active gardening and vegetable gardening will be the weekend, July 11 and 12, when the Moon enters fertile signs, minimizing stress on plants from transplanting or pruning.

To achieve the best results, experts recommend dividing the work evenly across the days of the week.

Monday, July 6. It’s worth dedicating time to thoroughly controlling weeds, which are currently actively competing with crops for scarce moisture, as well as loosening the dry soil around root crops and removing excess runners on strawberry plants.

Tuesday, July 7. It is recommended to actively focus on shaping vegetable crops in greenhouses and in open fields, paying attention to pruning tomato side shoots, pinching back cucumber vines, tying climbing plants to supports, and performing preventive pest control in the garden.

Wednesday, July 8. The focus shifts entirely to fertilizing garden crops, so it’s worth carrying out scheduled fertilization of vegetables with organic or mineral fertilizers applied at the base of the plants, be sure to combine this process with generous evening watering.

Thursday, July 9. Now is a good time to harvest the first summer crops for immediate consumption, including early cabbage, young zucchini, squash, and cucumbers, as well as to thin out summer plantings of carrots and table beets.

Friday, July 10. It’s a good idea to focus on protecting the soil from overheating by mulching vegetable beds with straw or dried grass, while also preparing and tilling the areas that have become available after harvesting early greens.

Saturday, July 11. This day is ideal for reseeding dill, spinach, arugula, and various leafy greens for fall consumption, as well as for thoroughly watering the entire garden.

Sunday, July 12. Spend the day harvesting ripe currants, raspberries, red currants, and gooseberries, combining this with light sanitary pruning of the berry bushes and removing damaged branches.

Given the intense sunlight in mid-summer, experienced gardeners recommend shifting all major tasks to the morning or evening hours. Water plants exclusively with warm, settled water at the base of the plant, avoiding getting water on the leaves to prevent sunburn. Experts also emphasize the importance of mulching the soil with straw or cut grass, which helps retain scarce moisture near the roots and protects the soil from overheating and the formation of a dry crust.
