Surgeons in Lviv performed a unique procedure on arteries in record time
In Lviv, specialists at St. Panteleimon Hospital performed simultaneous stenting of two critically narrowed carotid arteries in a 76-year-old man in just 30 minutes; one of the arteries was completely blocked.
Thanks to this unique and lightning-fast procedure, the Lviv medical team was able to effectively prevent a severe stroke in the elderly patient.
Mr. Roman sought treatment from Lviv specialists, complaining of constant dizziness, severe lightheadedness, and periodic loss of consciousness.
Doctors determined that these dangerous conditions were caused by regular transient ischemic attacks—brief disruptions in cerebral blood flow.

A thorough diagnosis revealed that both of the patient’s carotid arteries, which directly supply blood to the brain, were in critical condition.
The left artery was 90% narrowed, and the right one was completely blocked, which could have led to paralysis or death at any moment.
Given the enormous risks, the medical team decided to perform an emergency invasive procedure.

The main challenge of the operation was the chronic occlusion, which required surgical precision from the cardiac surgeons to restore vascular patency.
“We performed an endovascular procedure—placing stents in two vessels simultaneously. During the operation, we managed to identify a small collateral blood flow, guide special stents through it, restore patency in the completely occluded vessel, and restore blood supply to the right hemisphere of the brain,” says Oleksandr Golub, Deputy Medical Director for Angiography at the First Medical Association of Lviv.
What makes this medical case unique is that the surgeons were able to simultaneously restore full blood flow in two major arteries in record time.
The life-saving procedure lasted only 30 minutes, although such high-tech interventions typically take specialists about two hours.
“Every year, we perform over 120 carotid artery stenting procedures and about 20 recanalizations of chronic carotid artery occlusions. This is one of the highest rates in Ukraine. At the same time, we always emphasize to patients that it is extremely important to seek medical help in a timely manner, as early diagnosis and treatment can prevent a stroke and its severe consequences,” adds Oleksandr Golub.
This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lviv.
