The Ministry of Defense has endorsed the ban on construction near Lviv Airport
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has opposed the construction of residential complexes near the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv International Airport, arguing that such development could hinder the operation of this strategic facility and its future growth.
This concerns plans to build apartment buildings in Sokilnyky, near the airport grounds. The ministry emphasizes that the emergence of residential neighborhoods near the airport could pose risks to flight safety and limit the airport’s future expansion capabilities.
First Deputy Minister of Defense Oleksiy Vyskub noted that Lviv Airport is a facility jointly used by civil and state aviation, and its operation is of vital importance for the country’s defense capabilities, humanitarian missions, and military logistics.
The Ministry of Defense believes that the territories of the Sokilnytsia community near the airport should be kept free of residential development as a reserve for the development of airport infrastructure and the needs of the security and defense sector.
The Lviv City Council reiterated that it also opposes development near the runway. They believe that implementing the project could negatively impact the airport’s operations and its prospects following the resumption of air service.
Currently, legal disputes surrounding the project are ongoing, and the airport administration is challenging the changes to the Sokilnyky master plan.

The Office of the President of Ukraine explained the rationale behind the so-called “airport truce,” which envisages a possible cessation of attacks on airports. According to Mykhailo Podolyak, this initiative could be presented to Russia as a pragmatic step related to civil aviation safety. It involves a separate negotiation format that could become part of broader agreements to de-escalate the conflict.
