The Ministry of Health explained how to protect yourself from air pollution
Following Russia’s massive attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region, the threat of air pollution persists. The Ministry of Health advises people to spend less time outdoors, close their windows and doors, and take steps to protect their respiratory tracts. It is especially important to monitor your health and respond immediately if you experience breathing difficulties.
The Ministry of Health has issued recommendations to follow until the aftermath of the fires has been fully addressed. First and foremost, you should stay indoors. Windows and doors should be tightly closed to prevent polluted air from entering.

The Ministry of Health also advises turning off any ventilation systems that draw in air from outside. If your air conditioner has an air filtration feature, you can use it. If possible, turn on an air purifier. It’s best to postpone jogging, walking, and other outdoor activities until the situation improves.
Protect Your Respiratory Tract
If you need to go outside, the Ministry of Health recommends wearing a mask or respirator. If you don’t have one, you can cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth. This is not a substitute for a respirator, but it can help reduce the amount of pollutants entering your respiratory tract.
Monitor your health
During smog, it’s important to watch for symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, or eye irritation. For people with respiratory conditions, the Ministry of Health advises consulting a doctor in advance regarding possible precautions and necessary medications. If symptoms worsen or you experience serious breathing difficulties, seek medical attention immediately.
Follow official announcements
The Ministry of Health also urges people to follow local news and announcements from authorities. They will publish up-to-date information on air quality and further recommendations. People with breathing difficulties should find out in advance where temporary shelters or centers are located that they can turn to for help.
If heavy smoke persists for a long time, the Ministry of Health advises considering a temporary move to a region with better air quality. It is also essential to follow local authorities’ instructions regarding safety and evacuation. The Ministry of Health emphasized that following these simple recommendations will help reduce health risks during periods of heavy smoke. This information is posted on the Ministry of Health’s Facebook page.
Following one of Russia’s most intense nighttime attacks on Kyiv on August 5, elevated levels of air pollution were recorded in the capital. The situation is worst in the western and eastern parts of the city, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached unhealthy levels.
