The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers the detention of Ukrainians in India to be a politically motivated provocation
The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India has expressed serious concern over the circumstances surrounding the case against six Ukrainian citizens, pointing to signs of a premeditated action.
The diplomatic mission officially stated that there may be a political motive behind the detention, which took place on March 13. Kyiv firmly rejects any accusations that its citizens are involved in supporting terrorism in other countries, emphasizing its uncompromising anti-terrorism stance.
The Ukrainian side demands that the Indian government ensure maximum transparency, objectivity, and impartiality during the investigation. The situation is complicated by the fact that Indian authorities have been ignoring requests to allow consular access to the detainees for over a week. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasizes that such a prolonged denial of access to citizens constitutes a violation of international norms and calls for the immediate provision of consular support to clarify all circumstances of the incident.
To resolve the crisis, Ukraine proposes active cooperation between the competent authorities of both states based on the existing Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. Diplomats insist on utilizing all mechanisms of cooperation through central agencies to prevent Ukrainians from being used as tools in political manipulation. The Embassy continues to monitor the case closely, insisting on legal protection for each of the six detained compatriots.
India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) detained six Ukrainians and one U.S. citizen who, according to the investigation, illegally crossed the border from India into Myanmar to train rebel groups fighting against the Myanmar government.
During the court hearing on March 16, Ukrainian embassy staff were not allowed to speak with the detainees, and their detention was extended until March 27.
