In Bukovina, cigarette smuggling worth 4.4 million hryvnias was uncovered in a gas tanker

At the Ukrainian-Moldovan border in the Chernivtsi region, law enforcement officers foiled an attempt to illegally export 105,000 packs of cigarettes without excise stamps, which were hidden in a specially equipped compartment inside a gas tanker.

A MAN truck with a tanker arrived at the “Mamalyga–Kryva” border crossing on July 25. The driver claimed that the tanker was empty and was transiting through Moldova. However, during weighing, customs officials discovered that the vehicle was nearly one metric ton heavier than indicated in the documents.

After an additional scan, law enforcement officers discovered a hidden compartment. Inside the tanker were 280 cartons containing 105,000 packs of cigarettes without excise stamps, with a total value of over 4.4 million hryvnias.

The 53-year-old driver, who works for a logistics company, was notified that he is suspected of large-scale smuggling of excise goods. The court remanded him in custody with the option of posting bail of over 300,000 UAH. The truck, tanker, and seized tobacco products have been seized.
