In the Khmelnytskyi region, the sale of a unique 5th-century archaeological artifact was prevented
The police and the prosecutor’s office of Khmelnytskyi Oblast, in collaboration with the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, prevented the illegal sale of a unique archaeological artifact. The artifact in question is a belt plate from the Migration Period, crafted in the rare “Siosdala” style in the 5th century.
A man found the ancient artifact using a metal detector and then attempted to sell it through an online auction.
The item is made of precious metals; such artifacts were a symbol of the elite’s high status, and scholars suggest that the workshop where they were crafted may have been located in the western regions of modern-day Ukraine.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the prosecutor’s office and law enforcement agencies, working in close collaboration with experts from the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, the treasure did not end up in a private collection.
This was reported by the National Museum of the History of Ukraine.
