In the Kyiv region, a two-year-old boy was bitten by a snake while playing in the yard of a private home. The child was rushed to Okhmatdyt Hospital, where medical staff provided the necessary care and stabilized his condition.
Doctors emphasize that after a snake bite—even if the snake was not venomous—it is essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible for examination and observation.
Two-year-old Nektariy was playing in the yard of a private home when he suddenly ran into his father’s arms. He wasn’t crying, but his parents noticed redness on his leg. At first, they didn’t suspect anything unusual—they thought the child might have been bitten by an insect. But later, Nektariy’s temperature rose to 39.7 °C, and the bite site began to turn blue, so his parents took him to the emergency department at the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital.
After examinations, doctors confirmed a snake bite and prescribed detoxification and antibiotic therapy, while surgeons changed his dressings and monitored the condition of the wound. The boy is currently feeling well and has already returned home.
Vitaliy Its, head of the Department of Intensive and Efferent Therapy for Acute and Chronic Intoxications at “Okhmatdyt,” emphasized that even a minor or “dry” bite without venom requires medical supervision, as there is a high risk of the wound becoming infected with microorganisms from the snake’s mouth.
- Wash the bite site with soap and water or a chlorhexidine solution.
- Keep the child calm and restrict their movements.
- Go to the nearest emergency room or hospital as soon as possible.
- Medical professionals emphasize: do not apply a tourniquet, do not cut or cauterize the bite site, and do not attempt to suck out the venom.
- Bites to the face and neck are particularly dangerous, as swelling can increase rapidly and pose a threat to breathing.
It’s also important to monitor the child’s condition and the bite site. If redness, swelling, or bluish discoloration spreads rapidly, or if severe pain, weakness, or a deterioration in overall condition occurs, do not waste any time.
