U.S.-made scanners tested at Ukraine–Poland border to strengthen controls
Ukraine has launched a pilot operation of four mobile scanning systems manufactured by U.S.-based company Varex Imaging. The equipment is being used at key checkpoints along the Ukraine–Poland border.
Deputy Head of the State Customs Service Ivan Koval said the new systems are expected to help modernize customs control and enhance border security.
The State Customs Service of Ukraine said the systems have already been delivered and are operating in test mode at border crossing points.
Their use will enable more effective detection of concealed goods and help combat customs violations.
Artificial intelligence boosts accuracy
A key advantage of the new systems is built-in artificial intelligence, which analyzes images and automatically detects potential risks and anomalies.
This reduces the impact of human error and improves the accuracy of border control.
Versatility and flexibility
The scanners are versatile and capable of inspecting both cargo and passenger vehicles, including minibuses.
This flexibility allows them to be deployed based on traffic patterns and operational needs at border crossings.
Strategic checkpoints
The systems have been deployed at strategically important sections of the Ukraine–Poland border, including the checkpoints: Yahodyn, Rava-Ruska, and Krakivets.
A scanner will also be put into operation at the Shehyni checkpoint after reconstruction is completed.
The equipment was supplied under an agreement between the governments of Ukraine and Poland as part of a tied-aid loan.
Faster procedures and increased capacity
The use of mobile scanners is expected to speed up customs procedures and vehicle processing.
Their high mobility and scanning speed reduce inspection times, increasing the capacity of border crossings, especially during peak periods.
