In the Lviv region, an 8-year-old boy nearly drowned in a pool
An 8-year-old child is in serious condition following an incident at a swimming pool in a resort complex in the Stryi region. The boy was there with a sports group that had come on vacation after their karate training sessions.
The incident occurred on August 1, but it was not reported to the police until August 10. Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into possible negligence in supervising the child.
“According to preliminary information, the boy was in the pool on the grounds of one of the resort complexes in the Stryi district. After the child was found in the water, resuscitation efforts were performed on-site, after which the boy was hospitalized in Lviv,” the police stated.
The regional prosecutor’s office added that the 8-year-old boy from Lviv was part of a karate sports group on vacation. That day, the children went to the pool at the coach’s instruction.
“According to the parents, the boy could not swim, which they had warned about and had provided him with swim floats. Later, the parents saw a video in a group chat showing their son in the pool without the swim floats. They immediately contacted the coach about this. About half an hour later, the coach informed the parents that the child was being resuscitated after drowning,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The child was transported to a hospital in Lviv. The boy has not regained consciousness and remains in stable but critical condition. Medical personnel did not notify the police until today. Investigators from the Stryi District Police Department have opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 137 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (negligent performance of duties regarding the protection of children’s lives and health, resulting in serious consequences). The penalty provides for restriction of liberty or imprisonment for a term of three to five years.

A pre-trial investigation is currently underway to identify all participants in the criminal scheme and bring them to justice. The suspects face up to eight years of imprisonment, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
