In Lviv Oblast, the head of a forestry enterprise is to stand trial for illegal logging worth over ₴100 million
The Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office of the Office of the Prosecutor General has filed an indictment against the director of the Slavske-based forestry subsidiary “Galsillis,” who is also a sitting member of the local council. The official is charged with illegal logging committed by a group of individuals acting in concert, which resulted in serious consequences.
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
According to the investigation, between 2019 and 2023, more than 18,000 trees were illegally cut down in the Stryi district under the guise of supposedly legal “thinning” operations. The total environmental damage is estimated at over 103 million hryvnias.
Investigators established that the official, who was supposed to ensure the reforestation of the territories, instead issued logging permits for such operations, even though the law does not provide for this type of work.
To recover the damages, prosecutors filed civil lawsuits on behalf of the state, represented by the Kozivska Village Council and the Slavska Settlement Council.
At the same time, the prosecutor’s office notes that, in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court in accordance with the procedure established by law.
Earlier, three officials from the forestry sector in the Kherson region were notified of suspicion of illegally cutting down more than 2,200 trees on the territory of the Velykooleksandrivka Forestry.
The prosecutor’s officeprevented the destruction of 20 plots of century-old forest near Bukovel.
Also, after nearly five years of legal proceedings, a complex of historic buildings dating from 1830–1910, located in the historic part of Podil near Zamkova Hill, was returned to the Kyiv community.
