Ukraine is preparing for new fuel environmental standards and the transition to EU standards
Ukraine is beginning preparations to implement updated environmental requirements for the use of bioethanol in automotive gasoline. The reform involves harmonizing fuel quality standards with EU regulations, modernizing laboratory testing systems, and updating sampling procedures.
This was reported by the Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine.
During a roundtable discussion on the topic, Deputy Minister Taras Vysotsky emphasized that the changes concern not only the share of biofuel but also the creation of a system to monitor its quality on the market. According to him, this is part of Ukraine’s European integration commitments under the RED-II and RED-III directives.
The reform provides for the gradual implementation of European technical regulations:
- EN 228 for gasoline
- EN 590 for diesel fuel
Among the main innovations:
- Abolition of outdated environmental standards—plans to phase out Euro-3 and Euro-4 gasoline
- Transition to the European fuel classification system — replacing Soviet-era designations such as A-80 and A-92
- Expansion of biofuel use — regulation of blends with alcohol content ranging from 10% to 50%
- Updating diesel fuel standards — maintaining cloud point requirements while accounting for Ukraine’s climate
It is specifically noted that the reform aims not only at environmental modernization but also at bringing the Ukrainian fuel market in line with European quality and safety standards.
Currently, government agencies and private laboratories are beginning technical preparations of equipment to work with the updated fuel samples.
As of Friday, May 22, changes in retail fuel prices were recorded in Ukraine: the average price of A-95 gasoline rose by 9 kopecks to 75.57 UAH/liter, while diesel fuel fell by 8 kopecks to 87.3 UAH/liter.
