In the Lviv region, doctors saved a pregnant woman with acute pancreatitis

Specialists at the “Mother and Child” Clinic had to save 21-year-old Anna Smuk from Sokaly and her unborn daughter. At 34 weeks of pregnancy, the woman developed acute pancreatitis, which posed serious risks to both the mother and the baby.

The patient’s condition was so severe that she was evaluated six times by a multidisciplinary team of doctors.

Anna Smuk’s illness began suddenly. Late in the evening, she experienced severe abdominal pain. She initially sought medical care in her hometown, after which she was referred to Lviv, to the Lviv National Medical University Hospital.

Due to the severity of her condition, the patient was examined multiple times by a multidisciplinary team. After performing an ultrasound and an MRI, the doctors diagnosed acute pancreatitis.

The clinic noted that acute pancreatitis during the 34th week of pregnancy is a serious condition, as it can pose a risk to both the woman and the baby. The medical team had to simultaneously monitor the condition of both the mother and the fetus and determine the safest delivery strategy.

As Anna Smuk’s toxicity worsened, her labor began spontaneously.

The delivery was attended by obstetrician-gynecologist Oleksandr Besedin. According to him, in this situation, the doctors decided not to perform a cesarean section because labor had already begun naturally, and the baby’s condition showed no significant abnormalities.

“In this case, a cesarean section would have been an unnecessary burden. Since labor began spontaneously and there were no major abnormalities on the part of the baby, it was decided to complete the delivery through the natural birth canal,” says Alexander Besedin.

As a result, a baby girl named Eva was born at 34 weeks of pregnancy. She weighed 1,590 grams and was 44 centimeters long.

Due to her premature birth, the newborn required intensive medical care. The baby received respiratory support via mechanical ventilation, was administered exogenous surfactant, and was prescribed antibiotic therapy and parenteral nutrition.

Eva’s condition has now improved. She no longer requires respiratory support and is breathing on her own. She is also feeding better on donor breast milk.

Doctors continue to monitor the condition of the mother and her daughter.

This was reported by the hospital.

In addition, a 33-year-old woman from the Sambir region was admitted to the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital in serious condition with suspected botulism. The illness was likely caused by homemade stewed meat that the woman purchased at a market in Sambir.

Earlier, specialists at the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital successfully treated a 56-year-old woman from Lviv who had been hospitalized with suspected brain metastases or toxoplasmosis. However, the woman’s family doctor suspected an infectious disease and advised her to consult infectious disease specialists first.

Earlier, cardiac surgeons at the Lviv National Medical University Hospital performed a complex heart surgery on a 70-year-old resident of Krasne in the Lviv region. During the procedure, the medical team used the rare “Chimney” technique for mitral valve surgery for the first time in Ukraine.

As a reminder, doctors in Lviv saved 77-year-old Stepan Rebets, who was diagnosed with an extremely rare liver tumor measuring 25×17 centimeters. Due to the tumor’s hormonal activity, the man’s body was losing glucose, and the patient himself fell into a hypoglycemic coma due to critically low glucose levels.

Prior to this, specialists at the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of Lviv’s First Medical Association successfully performed a complex kidney-preserving surgery on an 8-year-old boy from the Ternopil region using the Senhance robotic system with built-in artificial intelligence.

Earlier, doctors managed to extend the pregnancy of a 28-year-old patient by another 97 days after her water broke. Thanks to this, the baby’s organs had time to develop sufficiently, and the boy was born in satisfactory condition and did not require intensive care.

Doctors diagnosed a 35-year-old woman from Lviv with an extremely rare jaw disorder.

As a reminder, Ukraine will establish its first Center for Robotic Surgery.

In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman simultaneously underwent removal of a recurrent ventral hernia, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth.
