A former lawmaker and his son were arrested in Lviv Oblast for a scheme involving travel abroad
In the Lviv region, law enforcement officials detained a former lawmaker and his son, who are suspected of organizing a scheme to illegally profit from conscripts. According to the investigation, they offered “services” for illegally leaving Ukraine and avoiding mobilization for $15,000.
As reported by the Lviv region police, the suspects offered the “client” two options for illegal departure: obtaining forged medical documents for $15,000 to cross the border, or illegal departure outside of border checkpoints for $10,000. The man chose the more expensive option involving documents.
According to the investigation, the suspects promised to arrange for the issuance of a fictitious Group III disability status, which would allow for unimpeded departure from Ukraine under martial law. To build trust, they met with the “client” several times in crowded places near shopping centers and demonstrated their “connections” in medical institutions.
In addition, the man was taken to a medical facility in Lviv several times, but he did not interact with the doctors. The man remained in the car while the organizers allegedly “resolved issues” with the documents.
As the prosecutor’s office clarified, they also received funds from the “client” allegedly for medical services: 40,000 hryvnias for tests and 11,000 for arranging inpatient treatment.
Law enforcement officers documented the transfer of part of the illicit benefit and caught the father and son “red-handed” near a shopping center in Sykhiv after they received $7,500. Those detained were a former deputy of the Zhovkivsky District Village Council and his son, a businessman involved in freight transportation.
During searches of the father’s residence, ammunition for small arms was discovered. It was sent for examination for further legal assessment.
Both suspects have been notified of their suspicion of organizing the illegal smuggling of persons across the state border (Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
