In the Poltava region, a former police officer was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the deaths of two of triplet sisters
The Karlivsky District Court of Poltava Oblast has sentenced a former police officer who, while intoxicated, caused a fatal traffic accident that killed two 17-year-old sisters.
The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to the maximum penalty provided for by the law—12 years in prison. He was also stripped of his right to drive vehicles and his special rank for 10 years.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of November 30, 2025, in Karlivka. The police sergeant, while driving his own Hyundai Tucson, struck two 17-year-old girls who were walking along the side of the road on their way home. They died at the scene from their injuries. The victims were triplet sisters.
The investigation revealed that the driver was heavily intoxicated—his blood alcohol level was 1.7 per mille. Additionally, he was driving through a populated area at a speed exceeding 100 km/h.
After the accident, the law enforcement officer was arrested and taken into custody without the right to post bail. Following the results of an internal investigation, he was dismissed from the police force.
In court, the defendant pleaded guilty and apologized to the mother of the deceased girls.
“Driving while intoxicated and excessive speed led to the fatal consequences. My position in court as a public prosecutor was unequivocal—the maximum punishment provided for by the relevant article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” stated Yevhen Hladiy, head of the Poltava Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
