In Sumy Oblast, a drunk soldier caused a car accident, killing a 17-year-old boy
Officers from the State Bureau of Investigations have detained a military servicemember suspected of causing a fatal traffic accident in the Romny District of Sumy Oblast.
According to the investigation, the accident occurred on the evening of June 1, 2026, near the village of Terny.
“On the evening of June 1, 2026, a serviceman driving a passenger car veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a motorcycle. As a result of the accident, the 17-year-old motorcycle driver sustained severe injuries and died in the hospital a few hours later,” law enforcement officials reported.
During the investigation, it was established that the driver of the passenger car was under the influence of alcohol.
After his arrest, the man was charged under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, if such actions resulted in the death of the victim.
The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment, as well as the revocation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of up to ten years.
Law enforcement officials are currently preparing materials to determine a preventive measure for the suspect.
The Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the proceedings in the case.
Investigative actions are ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the tragic accident.
