In the Sumy region, soldiers rescued a Red-listed harrier
Ukrainian military personnel in the Sumy region rescued a Red Book-listed harrier that was unable to fly because its feathers were covered in resin or varnish. The bird of prey is currently undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of veterinarians.
According to animal welfare activists, the harrier’s body was covered in a sticky substance resembling resin or varnish, which caused the bird to lose its ability to fly and forage for food on its own.
Ukrainian military personnel discovered the exhausted bird of prey and handed it over to specialists for rescue.
After an examination, veterinarians determined that it is impossible to wash the resin or varnish off its feathers.
Therefore, the only way to return the bird to the wild is to wait for its plumage to fully regrow, after which it will be able to fly again.
Currently, the Red Book-listed bird is at the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, where specialists are caring for it.
Experts note that the harrier will remain at the center until its plumage has completely molted and its rehabilitation is complete, after which the bird is scheduled to be released back into the wild.
