In Zakarpattia, a female driver was sentenced to 8 years for a traffic accident that killed a mother and her son

The Volovets District Court in Zakarpattia Oblast sentenced a 31-year-old female driver to eight years in prison for a traffic accident that killed a 48-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son. She was also banned from driving for three years, according to “Ukrainska Pravda,” citing the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the accident occurred on December 27, 2025, on the Kyiv–Chop highway in the Volovets district. The defendant was driving a Nissan Pathfinder and veered into the oncoming lane, where she collided with a car carrying a family from Vinnytsia who were returning home from vacation.

A man was driving the victims’ car; his 48-year-old wife was riding next to him, and their 13-year-old son was in the back seat. All three were wearing seat belts. The boy died at the scene of the accident; his mother died in the hospital a few hours later without regaining consciousness. The father sustained moderate injuries.

Miroslav Patskan, head of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office, stated during the proceedings: “In this case, the consequences are what matter most. Two people died. One of them was a child. Another person survived but has lost his family forever.”

The court partially granted the victims’ civil claims for compensation for emotional distress. Until the verdict becomes final, the defendant will remain in custody without the right to bail.
