A soldier was detained in Zakarpattia on suspicion of organizing illegal border crossings
On May 20, officers from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), in cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the State Border Guard Service, apprehended a military servicemember suspected of organizing the illegal smuggling of men across the border.
According to the investigation, the senior soldier offered to facilitate an illegal border crossing into Slovakia outside of official checkpoints for $6,000 and instructed the “client” on the route. The suspect was detained after receiving the funds, and he has been placed in pretrial detention.
He gave the “client” detailed instructions on how to proceed, where to hide, and which route to take, specifically showing the way via Google Maps. At the same time, according to preliminary data, the soldier had no real ability to organize such a crossing.
The suspect was detained immediately after receiving the money. He was notified of the charges under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—organizing the illegal smuggling of persons across the state border for personal gain.
The penalty under this article provides for up to 9 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The court imposed a pretrial detention measure. The proceedings are being supervised by the Transcarpathian Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Western Region.
