Hackers who defrauded U.S. e-commerce platforms out of $250,000 were apprehended in Odessa

Law enforcement officials in Odesa have exposed members of an international hacking group who used malware to attack users of American online trading platforms

Prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General, in collaboration with the National Police and the Cyber Police, determined that the cybercriminals caused over $250,000 in damages to foreign companies.

The joint operation by Ukrainian agencies was based on information from U.S. authorities, who identified the likely source of the attacks as being within Ukraine.

The investigation established that the attackers used specialized malware to gain unauthorized access to the devices of users of foreign online platforms.

Without the account owners’ knowledge, they obtained their login credentials and quickly transferred the confidential information to their own servers.

This confidential data was subsequently used to gain unhindered access to the personal profiles of U.S. citizens on popular international e-commerce platforms.

Using the victims’ accounts, the hackers made illegal purchases by exploiting the linked bank cards and payment systems of the affected foreign nationals.

In fact, users were completely unaware that their personal accounts and financial instruments were being secretly used to pay for third-party commercial orders.

Separately, law enforcement agencies are conducting detailed investigations into financial transactions involving so-called chargebacks.

Prior to this, hackers gained access to data from the Booking.com reservation site, the company reported. The attackers were able to obtain information about customer reservations, and some users received emails on Sunday notifying them of a possible data breach.

The hackers also attacked the Hyperbridge, which connects the Ethereum and Polkadot blockchains, gaining control of the DOT token contract via a spoofed message. As a result, they minted 1 billion counterfeit DOT tokens and immediately sold them in a single transaction, netting approximately $237,000.
