An official from a military unit in Zaporizhzhia will stand trial for embezzling nearly 10 million hryvnias
The Zaporizhzhia Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Defense in the Eastern Region has filed an indictment against the head of the accounting unit of the financial and economic service of one of the combat brigades.
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
The official is accused of organizing a large-scale scheme to embezzle funds intended for the financial support of military personnel.
The total amount of losses incurred by the state over two years of illegal activity amounts to 9.72 million hryvnias.
The investigation established that the accused gained access to the payroll system using the login and password of his immediate supervisor.
The perpetrator manipulated electronic data: he changed the bank card details of active-duty military personnel to his own accounts and also added the names of individuals who had already been discharged to the records.
To launder and conceal the stolen funds, the suspect opened 14 separate bank accounts at various financial institutions.
Between May 2023 and April 2025, the official systematically embezzled state funds, spending them on personal expenses.
He used part of the embezzled millions to pay off his own loans, make expensive purchases, and gamble.
In April 2025, in an attempt to evade responsibility, the man left his military unit without authorization, having previously staged his departure from Ukraine.
The suspect was not apprehended until January 2026 as a result of investigative operations. He is currently in custody and faces charges of large-scale fraud, money laundering, and desertion.
Separately, the guilt of his superior—the head of the financial service—was established; due to professional negligence, he failed to ensure the protection of passwords, which allowed the scheme to be carried out in the amount of over 7.3 million UAH.
In addition, the audit revealed instances of illegal accrual of bonuses and additional payments to other unit officials totaling over 4.25 million hryvnias in 2023–2024.
These payments were made despite the fact that the recipients were not performing combat duties.
It should be noted that, according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until their guilt is officially proven in court.
As a reminder, a lawyer and a law enforcement officer will stand trial in Zaporizhzhia for a scheme involving the apartments of deceased individuals.
Also, two young men will stand trial in Kyiv for brutally beating a neighbor over music.
