NABU unable to detain Mindich due to lack of control over his movements

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) was unable to prevent businessman Timur Mindich—a key figure in the Energoatom embezzlement case—from leaving the country due to a lack of control over his movements and telephone, NABU Director Semen Kryvonos said.

Kryvonos explained that notifying border guards of Mindich’s possible departure could have led to a leak of information, and even if NABU had been present at the border, Mindich would still have been allowed to leave.

The head of the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), Oleksandr Klymenko, confirmed that possible leaks occurred during the operation. Two criminal proceedings have been opened, and an official investigation is underway into the potential disclosure of information through SAP prosecutors.

During the investigation, phones of those involved were seized for analysis to determine who might have been responsible for the leaks. Klymenko noted that some individuals were still in Ukraine the day before the searches, while Mindich had already left the country.

Kryvonos also criticised the Financial Monitoring Service for failing to respond to a scheme to legalise $100 million.
