The Unholy Nicholas and Lyudmila: The Ministry of Justice Seeks to Confiscate Azarov's Property
The Ukrainian Ministry of Justice has initiated proceedings to forfeit to the state the assets of former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and his son Oleksiy, who are subject to Ukrainian sanctions.
According to Glavkom, the list of property subject to confiscation includes hundreds of valuable items seized during searches of Azarov’s Kyiv apartment back in 2016.
Among the seized property are antique books from the 17th–19th centuries, a collection of icons, hunting weapons, and other items that may be of historical and cultural value. In particular, law enforcement officers discovered dozens of icons depicting St. Nicholas, as well as an icon titled “St. Nicholas and St. Ludmila.”
Currently, approximately 580 items are under seizure and are being held as evidence at a unit of the Kyiv National Police.
In late May, the High Anti-Corruption Court prohibited any actions involving this property, upholding a corresponding motion by the Ministry of Justice. This decision marked one of the stages in the procedure for the subsequent confiscation of assets.
The Ministry of Justice notes that the sanctions case against the Azarov family comprises 28 volumes, and since some of the assets are registered in the names of third parties, the state must prove that the sanctioned individuals exercise actual control over them.
