Hungary's new foreign minister announced a change in approach toward Ukraine and the EU — Bloomberg
Hungary’s new foreign minister, Anita Orbán, has stated that Budapest will change its approach to engaging with the European Union and will stop politically blocking decisions, but will continue to advocate for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
She made this statement during parliamentary hearings on her appointment, according to Bloomberg.
According to Orbán, the previous government too often used the veto not as a last resort, but as a tool for political pressure.
She named restoring access to EU funding—which had been frozen due to Brussels’ concerns regarding the rule of law—as one of the key priorities of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s new government.
At the same time, Budapest does not plan to radically change its position on Ukraine. Orbán stated that support for Ukraine’s further European integration will be considered exclusively from the perspective of Hungary’s national interests.
The new government also intends to continue raising the issue of additional rights for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Hungary has returned to Ukraine the funds and assets of Oschadbank that were seized by Hungarian special services in March of this year.
Earlier, Hungary’s future Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the issue of returning the frozen Ukrainian funds of Oschadbank would only be subject to negotiations after the new government is officially formed.
