Ukrainian schools will begin the new school year with a lesson on dignity

On September 1, schools across Ukraine will hold a nationwide lesson titled “The Language of Dignity: Seeing the Person Behind the Words,” dedicated to respect, diversity, and barrier-free communication. The Ministry of Education and Science has prepared materials for students in grades 1–12, which teachers can adapt to suit the age and needs of their specific class.

The lesson will focus on mutual respect, acceptance of diversity, and barrier-free communication. The Ministry of Education and Science notes that schools not only impart knowledge to children but also shape the values and models of interaction that they carry into adulthood.

“That is precisely why mutual respect, acceptance of diversity, and respect for the dignity of others must become second nature starting in school,” the Ministry emphasized.

“The Language of Dignity: Seeing the Person Behind the Words” was not designed as a traditional lecture. It is a toolkit featuring a variety of activities, questions, and scenarios that will help students discuss the impact of words on other people.

In particular, students will be able to understand why certain statements can stigmatize or exclude a person and how communication can be approached differently.

The materials allow teachers to independently choose the format most appropriate for a specific class. Educators can change the order of the activities and adapt the lesson to the age and needs of their students.

The lesson plan kit is designed for students in grades 1–12. It includes ready-made materials and presentations for conducting the lesson, stories and real-life scenarios for discussion, as well as questions to spark conversation with the students.

In addition, students will be offered interactive quizzes and project-based tasks. A separate section of materials is dedicated to ethical and inclusive communication. All lesson materials are available online.
