Odesa will not run out of water, authorities say

Reports of a potential drinking water shortage in Odesa due to contamination of the Dniester River are false. Messages circulating online do not reflect reality. Water supply remains under control, samples have been tested, and there will be no deficit, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy and the Centre for Countering Disinformation (CCD) at the National Security and Defence Council.

Panic followed after Russian forces shelled the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant on 7 March. By 10 March, oily patches were observed near the village of Liadova, drifting downstream towards Moldova. “Preliminary data suggests the contamination may be linked to rocket fuel leaks after the Russian attack,” the Ministry said.

Despite the spread of technical oils, water intake remains under control. Specialists have already taken water samples near the Odesa water intake and in the Dniester estuary. Rescue services and specialised equipment are planned for cleaning the patches.

“Information that Odesa could face a drinking water shortage is not supported by official data,” the CCD stressed, urging residents not to panic. The situation remains under constant monitoring, and there is currently no threat to water supply. All clean-up operations are being conducted according to plan.
