A National Guard officer and two businessmen are suspected of embezzling more than 2.1 million hryvnias

The head of the housing and maintenance service of the logistics department at one of the military units of the National Guard of Ukraine and two businessmen have been notified that they are suspected of embezzling more than 2.1 million hryvnias in public funds during the procurement of firewood for the military.

According to the investigation, the official, together with the business owners, organized the purchase of firewood at inflated prices. To create the appearance of competition, they used coordinated price proposals from affiliated businesses and included fictitious price monitoring reports in the documentation. In total, two contracts were signed for more than 5.7 million hryvnias.

According to expert findings, the market value of the timber was significantly lower, resulting in losses to the state amounting to 2,125,351 UAH. The proceeds, according to the investigation, were converted into cash through the bank account of one of the businessmen.

The suspects were detained. During searches, law enforcement officers seized cell phones, electronic storage devices, financial and business records, and documents showing signs of forgery. The court ordered all three to be held in pretrial detention, with the alternative of posting bail in the amount of 998,000 UAH.
