Near Kyiv, hazardous medical waste was dumped directly on the ground for years
In Kyiv, the director of a hazardous waste disposal company and his deputy were notified of their status as suspects. According to the investigation, they improperly stored medical waste for years, contaminating the soil with hazardous substances and causing environmental damage exceeding 2 million hryvnias.
In Kyiv, law enforcement officials have charged the director of a hazardous waste disposal company and his deputy. According to investigators, their actions led to soil contamination with hazardous substances, causing environmental damage exceeding 2 million hryvnias.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the company accepted hazardous waste—including medical waste—from more than two dozen hospitals in Kyiv, as well as from dozens of medical facilities in other regions of Ukraine. Investigators determined that the waste had been incinerated on a leased plot of land since 2016. At the same time, according to the investigation, there were no proper conditions for storing the waste. Some of the hazardous materials were simply stored in the open, and there was virtually no proper environmental monitoring.
During the inspection, specialists from the State Environmental Inspection collected soil samples for laboratory analysis. The tests revealed levels of hazardous substances significantly exceeding permissible limits. “The tests revealed levels of a number of hazardous substances—including arsenic, lead, cadmium, petroleum products, chlorides, and sulfates—that significantly exceeded permissible limits,” the Office of the Prosecutor General reported.
According to experts’ conclusions, the land contamination caused losses to the state amounting to over 2 million hryvnias. The company’s director and his deputy were notified that they are suspected of contaminating the land with hazardous substances and abuse of authority. “The suspects’ actions have been classified under Part 1 of Article 239 and Part 2 of Article 364-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the prosecutor’s office noted.
In addition, the court has already imposed a pretrial measure on the company’s director. He was released on bail of nearly one million hryvnias. The pretrial investigation is currently ongoing. Law enforcement officials are establishing all the circumstances of the case and investigating the possible involvement of other individuals in the violations.
