Ukraine and Moldova have agreed to reduce water releases from the Dniester Reservoir
Ukraine and Moldova have agreed on joint measures in response to the critical drop in water levels in the Dniester River. Over the next two weeks, water releases from the Dniester Reservoir will be reduced from 100 to 85 cubic meters per second.
The parties reached this decision during a meeting of the Dniester Commission. Ukraine initially proposed reducing the discharge to 70 cubic meters per second to preserve water reserves in case of a prolonged drought, but after consultations, it agreed to a compromise.
In addition, Ukraine and Moldova agreed to continuously monitor water levels, water usage, and the operation of water intake facilities, particularly those supplying drinking water to Chisinau. Should the situation worsen further, the Dniester Commission will hold an extraordinary meeting and may consider restricting water use for irrigation and other non-critical needs.
