Ombudsman Demands Explanations Regarding the Death of a Servicemember Following Mobilization

A man died in the Lviv region following his mobilization, and the circumstances of his death have raised serious questions among his family and the ombudsman. Dmytro Lubinets is demanding full information from the Territorial Mobilization and Recruitment Center and a thorough investigation into all the details of this case.

An investigation is underway in the Lviv region into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who died the day after being mobilized. The situation has drawn widespread attention following the family’s claims of possible injuries on the body and contradictions in the medical reports, and the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, has already appealed to the Lviv Regional Military Registration and Enlistment Office demanding full information.

According to information provided by the deceased’s daughter, on June 13, 2026, her father was mobilized by employees of the Sheptytskyi District Military Registration and Enlistment Office and the Joint Staff, and he died the very next day. The family claims that they did not learn of his death immediately, and that his body remained in the morgue for a long time without any explanation or access to full information regarding the circumstances of the incident.

During the examination of the body, according to relatives, numerous injuries were observed, including bruises in the area of the liver and spleen, as well as injuries to the limbs. At the same time, the forensic medical examination report lists hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as the cause of death, which, according to the family, is inconsistent with the fact that the man had been deemed fit for military service the day before.

Lubinec emphasized that the situation requires a thorough and transparent investigation. “Every such case must be thoroughly investigated. If violations occurred, everyone involved must be held accountable under the law. The family has the right to know the truth. And society must receive honest and comprehensive answers,” he noted. The Ombudsman also drew attention to the lack of proper communication with the family and possible violations regarding access to procedural documents. Separately, he emphasized the need for systemic changes in approaches to mobilization procedures to avoid situations that breed public distrust and legal uncertainty.

Currently, the Lviv Regional Territorial Mobilization Center and the Joint Staff are required to provide official explanations regarding all the circumstances of the incident, and the case materials are being reviewed by the relevant authorities. Lubinets reported this on Telegram.

Over the past year, the number of employees designated as essential in the Ukrainian economy has increased by 300,000, and the list of enterprises recognized as critically important has grown by 9,000 new entities.
